WORSHIP IN ISLAM

INTRODUCTION:

Allah said in Quran 17:44 “The seven heavens, the earth, and all those in them glorify Him. There is not a single thing that does not glorify His praises—but you simply cannot comprehend their glorification.” Surah Al-Isra - 44 - Quran.com

In Quran 24:41 “Do you not see that Allāh is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him],” Surah An-Nur - 41 - Quran.com

And in Quran 22:18 “Do you not see that to Allah bow down ˹in submission˺ all those in the heavens and all those on the earth, as well as the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, and ˹all˺ living beings, as well as many humans,Surah Al-Hajj - 18 - Quran.com

And in Quran 16:48-49 “Have they not considered how the shadows of everything Allah has created incline to the right and the left ˹as the sun moves˺, totally submitting to Allah in all humility? And to Allah alone bows down ˹in submission˺ whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth of living creatures, as do the angels—who are not too proud to do so.” Surah An-Nahl - 48-49 - Quran.com

This is further clarified in Sahih al-Bukhari 3207, when prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained the details about the Al Bait-ul-Ma'mur that is mentioned in Quran 52:04 And by the ˹Sacred˺ House وَٱلْبَيْتِ ٱلْمَعْمُورِ frequently visited! While explaining His ﷺ miraculous journey to the seven heavens, He ﷺ said: “Then I was shown Al-Bait-al-Ma'mur (i.e. Allah's House). I asked Gabriel about it and he said, this is Al Bait-ul-Ma'mur where 70,000 angels perform prayers daily and when they leave, they never return to it (but always a fresh batch comes into it daily).'” Sahih al-Bukhari 3207 - Beginning of Creation - كتاب بدء الخلق - Sunnah.com - Sayings and Teachings of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم)

And in Sunan Ibn Majah 4190 it was narrated from Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “I see what you do not see, and I hear what you do not hear. The heaven is creaking and it should creak, for there is no space in it the width of four fingers but there is an angel there, prostrating to Allah.” Sunan Ibn Majah 4190 - Zuhd - كتاب الزهد - Sunnah.com - Sayings and Teachings of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم)

And to understand the level of Allah’s praise that is done by every moving or still, seen or unseen creation, Allah mentioned in Quran 55:26-27 “Every being on earth is bound to perish. Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and Honour, will remain ˹forever˺. Surah Ar-Rahman - 26-27 - Quran.com This shows that the praise of Allah is independent of every being, the praise of Allah will be done even if everything is perished. It also shows us that the praise of Allah was done when nothing was created and will be done when everything will perish.

In Quran 31:27 Allah mentioned that “If all the trees on earth were pens and the ocean ˹were ink˺, refilled by seven other oceans, the Words (praise) of Allah would not be exhausted.” Surah Luqman - 27 - Quran.com

SubhanAllah. These detailed references show that Allah does not need our worship, He had a lot more creations that worshipped Him from the beginning of this universe and some are specifically created and designed to worship and praise Him, and His praise was done when nothing was created and will be done when everything will perish.

But if that is the case, why did Allah mention this in Quran 51:56 “I did not create jinn and humans except to worship Me.” Surah Adh-Dhariyat - 56 - Quran.com

This is answered in Quran 67:02 “He is the One˺ Who created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds.” Surah Al-Mulk - 2 - Quran.com This explains the reason for our creation and explains to us that there is a reward for us if we do good deeds. This is mentioned in many places of the Holy Quran when Allah promised a better exchange of the good deeds that we do and the reward of obeying Him.

Allah mentioned in the Quran 43:72 that “this is Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do.” Surah Az-Zukhruf - 72 - Quran.com and in Quran 09:72 “Allah has promised the believers, both men and women, Gardens under which rivers flow, to stay there forever, and splendid homes in the Gardens of Eternity, and—above all—the pleasure of Allah. That is truly the ultimate success.” Surah At-Tawbah - 72 - Quran.com and in Quran 10:26 “Those who do good will have the finest reward and ˹even˺ more (hidden treasures of world and the hereafter). Surah Yunus - 26 - Quran.com

Now we know that whatever good we do, it will be returned to us in the form of a reward that will be calculated according to Allah who is the most merciful and most gracious. But there is a reward for doing good that we will receive here in this world and within our life span. Allah mentioned this in Quran 24:55 “Allah has promised those of you who believe and do good that He will certainly make them successors in the land, as He did with those before them; and will surely establish for them their faith which He has chosen for them; and will indeed change their fear into security—˹provided that˺ they worship Me, associating nothing with Me.” Surah An-Nur - 55 - Quran.com and in Quran 02:152 Allah mentioned, “remember Me; I will remember you.” Surah Al-Baqarah - 152 - Quran.com

This explains to us, that whatever we do (good) in life, by worshipping Allah and obeying Him by spending this life according to His rules and regulations, it will only benefit us, both in this life and the hereafter. Even though Allah has created us for His worship similar to the other creations (every creation) who praise Him. But we (Humans and Jins) are the only creations who will be rewarded for praising Him, plus, this worship will also help us in the matters of this word such as protection from evil and success etc. This reward in the world and the hereafter is because we have been given the option to choose good or bad, this option is not given to any other creation, this sense of selection is called Nafs which guides and misleads us backed by devil jins and angels.

I hope this is now clear that we need to worship Allah for our good and He does not need us, we need Him, in conclusion, the reason for our creation is to Worship Allah.

Worship is divided into two categories and then these categories are further divided into subcategories.

Worship through actions.

The Messenger only has to deliver the message.” Surah An-Nur - 1-64 - Quran.com

CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, whatever we do directly affects us in this world or the hereafter, and if we obey Allah through worship and obedience, it will benefit us in two ways, one is that it will fulfil our purpose of existence and we live an anxiety free life, and the other benefit is that these good deeds and this obedience helps us getting rewards in this world and the hereafter.

JazakAllah hu khair!
